Ahead of BOE Demo AM Cruz, Common Cause/NY + Disability Advocates Oppose ExpressVote XL Voting Machine

Deliver 1000s of petitions urging BOE to reject the machine

NEW YORK, NY (02/24/2020) (readMedia)-- On Monday, Assemblymember Catalina Cruz, Common Cause/NY and Disability Rights New York will hold a press conference ahead of the New York State Board of Elections accessibility demonstration of the ExpressVote XL. ExpressVote XL is a touch screen voting machine that poses challenges for differently abled voters, and has been widely criticized by election security experts. Afterwards, Common Cause/NY will drop off thousands of petitions from New Yorkers across the state, urging the NYSBOE to reject the machine.

The ExpressVote XL has major accessibility flaws including:

  • No audio read back for write-in ballots
  • A hard to navigate keyboard
  • Small font on the print ballot
