Alabama National Guard celebrates Black History Month

MONTGOMERY, AL (02/23/2012)(readMedia)-- The Alabama National Guard held an observance in honor of Black History Month at Joint Force Headquarters, Montgomery, Ala., Feb. 23, 2012. The Special Emphasis Program Committee offered a video presentation and light refreshments.

"We usually have just one annual event for Black History Month, Asian Pacific, Native Americans... now we are trying something new this year, to do a little bit throughout the year to recognize everything," said Air Force Capt. Teri Spivey, State Equal Employment Manager.

"The Alabama National Guard is made up of a representative cross-section of Alabamians which creates a diverse workforce that encourages problem solving and overcoming challenges where all individuals contribute from their various backgrounds and experiences," said Army Major General Perry G. Smith, the Adjutant General of the Alabama National Guard.

"We need to be diverse. This shows we are here for everybody. Knowing we care enough to recognize these groups is what makes it special," said Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Donna Davis, an Alabama National Guard human resources assistant.
