WINCHESTER, VA (05/14/2014)(readMedia)-- The Winchester Parks and Recreation Department invites the community to participate in a short ceremony to prepare an American Flag to be sent to the United States Flag Retirement Plaza in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Each year the "By The Dawn's Early Light" United States Flag Retirement Plaza is the site for a Flag retirement ceremony conducted on Flag Day. This year, "By Dawn's Early Light" has requested that the U.S. Flag which has flown over the POW/MIA Memorial in Winchester to be sent to the site for retirement. The City of Winchester has decided to honor that request and conduct a suitable and fitting ceremony at 3pm on May 17th, during the Armed Forces Weekend, to recover a Flag from the POW/MIA Memorial for shipment to Pennsylvania for their event.

Accordingly, several local military service and veterans' organizations are participating in the event in Jim Barnett Park in Winchester, Virginia. The participating organizations are; The Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, AMVETS, Korean War Veterans Association, Vietnam Veterans of America, and the American Legion Riders. Winchester Pipes and Drums will be on hand to provide appropriate ceremonial music.
