WINCHESTER, VA (04/18/2014)(readMedia)-- The Winchester Parks and Recreation Department releases their spring/ summer 2014 program guide on Friday, April 18, 2014. The interactive version of the program guide can be viewed on the City website by logging on to http://www.winchesterva.gov/sites/default/files/documents/parks/activity-guides/summer-2014/index.html for an on-line flipbook. The department will begin taking program registrations on Friday, April 18 at the administration offices in Jim Barnett Park. The print version of the program guide will be delivered via direct mail to all Winchester residences as well as WPRD current customers the week of April 21st. This program guide features Wilkins Lake on the front cover. The visual appeal, the quality and quantity of programs, instructor expertise, continuity between brochures and collaborations with Old Town Winchester and the Winchester-Frederick County Convention and Visitors Bureau builds on the high standard previously established by the fall 2014 program guide.

What's new? This program guide features new programming such as the Alice in Wonderland Tea, Splash Bash, rugby youth leagues, the Cal Ripken World Series, water polo, Mini Maestros, Community Gardens, Indian Spice cooking class, guitar lessons, free smart phones classes and much more. For our Spanish speaking community, we have devoted two full pages of programs with registration form translated into Spanish. To accommodate for the incredible amount of information about leagues, community recreation programs, camps, special events, amenities and outdoor spaces, the department created a 32- page, full color, glossy booklet. The guide includes a spotlight on facility members, the Bubble Van comeback, environmental education, Babe Ruth World Series, needs assessment, park ambassadors and the new therapy pool. The guide also includes a Winchester history section to impart knowledge and generate pride in Fort Loudoun's role during the French and Indian War. Located on page 18 of the program guide, listed in the Environmental Education section, is an article about Abrams Creek Wetlands Preserve written by Shenandoah University Professor of Environmental Studies, Woodrow Bousquet. The City of Winchester's Strategic Plan and upcoming city-wide improvements is also included.

Though the brochure is produced by the Winchester Parks and Recreation Department as a whole, the focus of the brochure is 70% on the recreation division programs. The community programs contained within the brochure are our estimation of trends, expressed community interests and are a reflection of the director's managerial agenda - improving the human condition of our diverse community through parks and programs. In the world of parks and recreation, the department program guide/brochure is the single best way to communicate the department's message to the community.

The program guide hard copies can also be picked up after Friday, April 18th at Handley Library, Rouss City Hall, the War Memorial Building in Jim Barnett Park, Winchester-Frederick County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and most area coffee shops.

A special shout out to Renee Bayliss, the Visitor and Community Relations Specialist, who graphically designed the program guide.
