NEW YORK, NY (10/09/2025) (readMedia)-- NEW YORK-New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted Thursday as President Trump continues to utilize the United States Justice Department to pursue charges against his political opponents.
Attorney General James had successfully brought a civil fraud case against Trump and his real estate business before he re-took office. Her indictment follows former FBI Director James Comey pleading not guilty in a congressional proceeding this week, as the Justice Department has multiple open investigations into other notable Trump challengers, like John Bolton, Sen. Adam Schiff, and more.
Statement of Common Cause President and CEO Virginia Kase Solomón:
It is no coincidence that two of President Trump's major critics are indicted within weeks of one another, in the middle of the federal government shutdown. The President is utilizing this Department of Justice as a tool for revenge and is attempting to intimidate our courts in an effort to silence dissent and intimidate those who dare to challenge him. He is abusing authority in an effort to bulldoze his way to absolute and unquestioned power. Attorney General James' indictment is another glaring warning sign of President Trump's authoritarian tactics -and of what's to come without strong checks and balances in place. Everyone-Republicans and Democrats- should be alarmed by this glaring abuse of power.
Statement of Common Cause New York Executive Director Susan Lerner:
The recently announced federal indictment of New York Attorney General Leticia James is outrageous and shameful. The Trump regime's willingness to trample the rule of law continues unabated. This is yet another politically motivated prosecution against someone who has dared to stand up to Donald Trump and his minion's lawlessness. Common Cause New York stands with Attorney General James and all those who seek to hold power to account.
