While we all loved the fresh strawberries, summer has a couple more tricks up her sleeve. Raspberry and blueberry patches are now hitting their stride. If you thought the strawberries of New York State tasted great, just wait till you sample this season's raspberries and bluberries.
You already know where to go to find these new summer delights. Just click back onto your berry website for information as to where the next harvest will be occuring in your neighborhood. Click onto www.nysbga.org and pull up the familiar "Find a Farm" site. Here you can select your county and find berry farms close to where you live. Call them before you go to check as to the best date and time to visit the patch. They will help you plan your next outing.
Blueberries and raspberries are not only great tasting and colorful but extremely high in nutritional value. Each one is high in viatamins A, C, E and foic acid. They also are a temendous source of potassium for your diet. Researchers have also discovered these summer treats to be high in antioxidants which we all know are great disease fighting qualities. Just like the strawberries, I caution mentioning a word of this to the kids. Do not spoil their fun by telling them they are so good for them. Let them firstf all in love with the fun of selecting and eating that perfect berry.
The season is just beginning and these summer beauties will be with us til fall. I do warn you however that there are only so many berries we can grow, so do not wait too long.
