WASHINGTON, DC (06/07/2012)(readMedia)-- Dr. Jill Biden, the wife of Vice President Biden, will read to children during a USO event at the D.C. National Guard Armory from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9. The DC National Guard is hosting the event.

What: Story Time with Dr. Jill Biden and the USO

When: Saturday, June 9 from 10-11 a.m.

Where: DC National Guard Armory

2001 E. Capitol Street, N.W.

Washington, DC 20003

"We're very pleased to be hosting this event with Dr. Biden," said Maj. Gen. Errol R. Schwartz, Commanding General of the DC National Guard. "Reading to children is probably one of the most important factors in determining the quality of a child's life. She is setting an example for hundreds, if not thousands, of children and their parents."

The event is by invitation only. Dr. Biden's new children's book Don't Forget, God Bless Our Troops, shares her granddaughter's experience when her father was deployed to Iraq.

When a parent is deployed it's hard on the entire family, and can be a time of confusion, worry and insecurity for the children of our men and women in uniform. Dr. Biden heard first-hand about those fears and concerns from her granddaughter, Natalie. Knowing that countless military children share her granddaughter's feelings, Dr. Biden set out to tell her story.

The book offers coping mechanisms and ideas on how to stay connected with loved ones through lengthy deployments and lets military kids know they are not alone.

The book also provides readers with ways they can support troops and military families. Dr. Biden accepted no advance for the book and will donate all net author proceeds to the USO in support of the future education of children of military families. Additionally, Simon & Schuster will make a contribution to the USO to support military children in honor of the book's publication.

The media is invited to attend the event. Reporting time to the Armory is 9:30 a.m.
