Gayle Bortz named Iowan of the Day

DES MOINES, IA (07/20/2018) (readMedia)-- Des Moines, IA- The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation and Cookies Food Products are pleased to present Gayle Bortz of Chariton as an Iowan of the Day for the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

"Gayle Bortz is the epitome of a true Iowan who gives of her time and talents to make the world a better place," says nominator Shelly Greving. Gayle continually gives a voice to those who are less fortunate. She is an advocate for people with intellectual disabilities through Mosaic, a lay spiritual director at First Lutheran Church and a member of Lutheran Lakeside Camp. As a speech pathologist, Gayle has taken her speech and language talents further and helps the sick and elderly communicate with their loved ones.

On any given day you can find Gayle somewhere in the Chariton community giving of her time in a variety of ways through her involvement as a Lucas County Health Center Ambassador or in the Chariton Chamber of Commerce, Homestead Assisted Living, Kiwanis, the Lucas County Arts Council and the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign. In fact, Gayle has logged 1,287 hours in the Chariton RSVP program as a volunteer.

Gayle has even sung acapella at the Iowa State Fair! The group, "Something New" performed on the Fairview Stage. They even recorded two CD's, one featuring oldies (but goodies) and the other featuring Christmas music.

Gayle's day of recognition will be on Sunday, August 12 at the 2018 Iowa State Fair. She will be recognized with a presentation on the Anne & Bill Riley stage at 2:00 p.m. Along with accommodations at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown, she will receive a gift bag, Grandstand tickets and use of the Iowan of the Day golf cart.

Founded in 1997, the Iowan of the Day program allows the Blue Ribbon Foundation to recognize Iowa's most outstanding individuals. The program continues to honor Iowans across the state who have made a difference in the lives of others, while upholding the characteristics associated with Iowa- dependability, integrity, hard work and sense of community.
