Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York Hosts the 2012 Year of the Girl Run

HALFMOON, NY (04/11/2012)(readMedia)-- Six hundred members and their families have signed up to participate in the 2012 Year of the Girl Run*.

The run is taking place on April 14th in the North Country and on April 29th in the Capital District of our Council. In the Capital District, the run will start at the Sage College campus in Troy. Check-in is at 7:30am at Bush Memorial Hall and the run will begin promptly at 9:00am. The North Country's run will take place at Brushton Hope Community Center and begin immediately at 12:30pm.

This is one of several events planned to celebrate Girl Scouts' Centennial. The run is a lot more than a running program. It's about embracing the power within each of us, and making healthy choices inside and out. The day of each run is the culmination of an exciting eleven week program which covered topics such as: Nutrition, Training, Fitness, Self-image & Self-esteem, Bullying and Healthy Media Images.

Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) has branded the centennial year as The Year of the Girl and is using the centennial as a platform to launch the boldest cause campaign dedicated to girls' leadership issues in the nation's history. All members of society are being asked to help girls achieve their full leadership potential. This will be a monumental shift in the way Girl Scouts supports girls in this country, and seek to get the issue of girls' leadership on the national agenda. This cause campaign is entitled "ToGetHerThere". ToGetHerThere – will help break down societal barriers that hinder girls from leading and achieving the highest ranks in all fields and industries, from science and technology to business and government.

Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York serves 11,000 girls and 5,000 volunteers throughout 15 counties: Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Columbia, Greene, Schoharie, Montgomery, Fulton, Washington, Warren, Hamilton, Essex, Franklin & Clinton. Service Centers are located in Albany, Queensbury and Plattsburgh with an administrative office in Halfmoon.
