MONTGOMERY, AL (09/22/2010)(readMedia)-- The Department of Defense recently awarded the Alabama Army National Guard Environmental Programs Office at the Fort McClellan Army National Guard Training Center a Legacy Award in support of National Public Lands Day (NPLD). Coordinated by the National Environmental Education Foundation, NPLD is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. The 17th annual NPLD will be held the weekend of September 25-26, 2010.
At the Fort McClellan training site, the NPLD weekend will focus on the creation of a venue for environmental education and outdoor classroom activities at Willett Springs on Pelham Range. The program will provide a more comprehensive outdoor recreation program and more opportunities for public use specifically aimed at children.
The National Guard Soldiers will be working with Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other volunteers to accomplish the weekend's goals.
