DES MOINES, IA (08/03/2026) (readMedia)-- The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation and Cookies Food Products are pleased to present John Emswiler of Algona as a 2026 Iowa State Fair "Iowan of the Day" on Thursday, August 13.
As a founding member and President of the North Central Iowa chapter of "Moving Veterans Forward", John has transformed the organization in less than a decade. Through his leadership, the organization helps veterans transition into stable housing by coordinating furniture donations, organizing fundraisers, and building partnerships with local businesses and community volunteers.
Known for his personal approach, John meets individually with every veteran to ensure they feel valued and supported. He has become known for driving hundreds of miles in all kinds of weather to personally deliver furniture and essential items to veterans in need.
In addition to his work with "Moving Veterans Forward", John operates a food pantry that provides food, gift cards, and other necessities to individuals and families facing hardship.
John's lifelong commitment to service extends beyond veterans' causes. After retiring from law enforcement following a 33-year career, he continues to give back through "Cops for Kids" and participation in summer reading programs that inspire young people. John also stepped in as a bus driver when Bishop Garrigan Schools experienced a driver shortage, once again answering the call to serve his community.
While John's accomplishments are extensive, those who know him say what makes him exceptional is not the scale of his impact, but the heart behind it. He consistently puts others before himself and leads with compassion, humility, and a deep commitment to helping those around him.
John will be recognized for his Iowan of the Day Award on the Iowa State Fair's Anne and Bill Riley Stage at noon on August 13. Along with being recognized he will receive, four admission tickets, four grandstand concert tickets, a VIP parking pass, hotel accommodations with the Des Moines Marriott Downtown, $200 cash, a golf cart for the day, and an Iowa State Fair Swag Bag.
The Iowan of the Day program, presented by the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation, recognizes outstanding Iowans who have made a positive difference in their communities through service, leadership, and dedication to others.
