KINGSTON, NY (03/06/2012)(readMedia)-- Ulster County Native Julian Schreibman to Challenge Rep. Chris Gibson Under Newly Proposed District Map

March 6, 2012-Kingston, NY "Earlier today, a court-appointed special master released proposed new Congressional districts. If these Districts are approved by the Court, I will be a candidate for the newly created 19th Congressional District. My opponent will be first-term tea-party Republican Chris Gibson. That's a race I'm eager to fight and win on behalf of the people of our region. Although redistricting is only now being completed, I have been campaigning since January because I don't believe in measuring the odds before standing up for our communities' values.

"Congress is broken and not working for the folks of upstate New York. We must focus on building a prosperous future for our region. This election is critical and the choices could not be more clear.

"Medicare is threatened by radical Republican budget proposals. Instead of treating all of our citizens fairly, special deals for powerful insiders and a radical social agenda in the House are preventing the common sense solutions for our nation's real problems. While lobbyists and their well-connected clients get whatever they want, the basic needs of our Upstate communities are being disregarded. Even if the district lines are changed again, I am committed to fighting for our communities.

"I will fight to defend Medicare; to end special deals for the powerful and well-connected in Washington; to clean up an unfair tax system where Americans who work for a living pay higher rates than the wealthy. I will fight to protect the rights of women and all of our families. And I will fight to protect the assets and people that make our region special-beautiful, livable and thriving.

"I've spent most of my career in public service in tough fights against terrorists, drug traffickers, cyber criminals and Wall Street crooks. I will bring the same fighting spirit to clean up Washington.

"Until recently, the redistricting process has been the victim of political gamesmanship that did not put the interests of our people first. I applaud the special master's decision to keep the counties and communities of the mid- and upper-Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains together and intact in the new maps she proposed today."

Julian Schreibman served as a federal prosecutor, as an Assistant General Counsel at the Central Intelligence Agency working on international terrorism cases, among others, and as Ulster County Senior Assistant District Attorney. In 2002, he received the Attorney General's Distinguished Service Award for assisting in the prosecution and conviction of four al Qaeda terrorists for bombing U.S. embassies (United States v. Osama bin Laden). The first in his family to go to college, Julian is a graduate of Kingston High School, Yale College and Yale Law School. He lives in Stone Ridge, NY, a few miles from his childhood home, with his wife, Shannon, and their three young boys.

Schreibman declared in January and is the only resident of the proposed District to file with the FEC as a candidate for the Democratic nomination.
