Kaitlin Dewey Named Athlete of the Year

Senior Gymnast named top Brockport female athlete

BROCKPORT, NY (05/11/2011)(readMedia)-- The hundreds of student-athletes on The College at Brockport's 23 varsity sports teams combined to earn dozens of All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) honors, a handful of national accolades and numerous academic awards while both the men's soccer and women's lacrosse teams once again qualified for the NCAA Division III tournaments.

In a year filled with memorable accomplishments, Brockport announced that senior gymnast Kaitlin Dewey (Saratoga, NY/Saratoga Springs) was named co-Female Athlete of the Year along with senior diver Maria Quagliana (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads).

The awards were announced during Brockport's annual Student-Athlete Awards celebration, held Saturday inside Brockport's Tuttle North Ice Arena.

Dewey set personal-bests in all four individual events and also the all-around to earn the 2011 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Division III National Senior Gymnast of the Year. Dewey broke Brockport school records on the uneven bars with a 9.775 during a tri-meet at Southern Connecticut State University, and she also set four personal-best scores during the meet. Dewey's all-around score of 38.550 was the third-highest all-around score in school history. Dewey's consistent performances week-in and week-out helped the Golden Eagles earn their ninth consecutive trip to nationals, and 11th in school history.

Dewey, the ECAC's Division III Gymnast of the Year, won the floor exercise with a personal-best 9.825 during the ECAC Championships as Brockport scored 189.100, the fourth-best score in school history.

The Athlete and Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were determined after compiling votes from each of Brockport's varsity coaches, as well as the Athletic Communications staff and select athletic administrators.
