Lacrosse Players Named All-SUNYAC
Four Brockport players earn All-Conference honors
BROCKPORT, NY (05/11/2011)(readMedia)-- The College at Brockport's men's lacrosse team won its last three regular-season games to secure the program's first-ever berth in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) postseason tournament. On Monday, the conference office announced that four Golden Eagles garnered spots on the year-ending All-SUNYAC teams.
Senior Jon Fiorillo (Painted Post, NY/Corning West) was named the goalie on the first-team All-SUNYAC squad. Fiorillo, who transferred into Brockport from Division I's Manhattan College, earned first-team All-SUNYAC honors after starting six of the last seven games in net for the Golden Eagles (6-8 overall).
Among the season highlights for Fiorillo: a career-high 23 saves, including eight in the fourth quarter, as Brockport defeated Plattsburgh 11-10 on April 16. Fiorillo went 3-3 down the stretch and finished with a 54.9 saves percentage while allowing 10.92 goals per game. Fiorillo was honored as the SUNYAC's Goalie of the Week after stopping 69.7 percent of the shots he faced against Plattsburgh, and 61.4 percent of the shots he faced for the week ending April 17.
Fiorillo becomes the first member of the Golden Eagles to earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors since David Shield in 2007.
Joining Fiorillo on the All-SUNYAC teams were a trio of Golden Eagles who earned second-team All-SUNYAC honors. Senior midfielder Mike Tammaro (Painted Post, NY/Corning West) set a Brockport school record with 29 assists and 40 points (11 goals), and he also tied a school record with nine points (two goals, school-record seven assists) during Brockport's come-from-behind, 14-13 win over Oneonta April 23. Tammaro, a four-year member of the varsity, was twice honored as the SUNYAC's Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week.
Senior Justin Tierney (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) earned second-team All-SUNYAC honors after scoring five goals with two assists. Tierney, a short-stick defenseman and four-year member of the varsity, started 12 games and scooped up 33 groundballs, third-highest total on the team.
Fellow four-year senior Mike Sanderson (Canton, NY/H.C. Williams) also garnered second-team All-SUNYAC honors after helping anchor Brockport's defense. Sanderson started all 14 games, scooping up 29 groundballs, fourth-most on the team, while causing a team-leading 25 turnovers.
Brockport earned the No. 4 seed in the SUNYAC tournament and trailed eventual champion Cortland 2-1 heading into the second quarter before the Green and Gold fell 13-5.
