Maria Quagliana Named Top Female Athlete

Brockport senior diver earned two All-American awards in 2011

BROCKPORT, NY (05/11/2011)(readMedia)-- The hundreds of student-athletes on The College at Brockport's 23 varsity sports teams combined to earn dozens of All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) honors, a handful of national accolades and numerous academic awards while both the men's soccer and women's lacrosse teams once again qualified for the NCAA Division III tournaments.

In a year filled with memorable accomplishments, Brockport announced the winners of its annual Athlete and Scholar-Athletes of the Year, and senior diver Maria Quagliana (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and senior gymnast Kaitlin Dewey (Saratoga, NY/Saratoga Springs) were named co-Female Athletes of the Year.

The awards were announced during Brockport's annual Student-Athlete Awards celebration, held Saturday inside Brockport's Tuttle North Ice Arena.

Quagliana earned All-American honors on both the one- and three-meter diving events during the 2011 NCAA Division III National Championship meet, the third All-American honors in Quagliana's career, and also the third in Brockport's women's swimming and diving history. Quagliana scored 407.40 points on 11 one-meter dives to finish in eighth place for All-American honors. Quagliana also placed 15th on the three-meter (359.70 points) to earn Honorable Mention All-American. Quagliana added an average of 40 points to her one-meter scores throughout her senior season while making her third consecutive appearance at nationals.

Earlier in the winter, Quagliana broke her own school record on the one-meter (440.1) to capture Brockport's first SUNYAC diving title since 2003-04. Quagliana earned first-team All-SUNYAC honors after winning the one-meter and placing second on the three-meter. During her senior season, Quagliana posted NCAA Division III national championship-worthy scores at least 12 times and won the one- and three-meter events 11 times apiece.

The Athlete and Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were determined after compiling votes from each of Brockport's varsity coaches, as well as the Athletic Communications staff and select athletic administrators.
