Tuskegee resident Col. Mark McGuire was recently inducted into the 2011 Brevard College Gallery of Distinguished Alumni in Brevard, N.C.

BREVARD, NC (10/26/2011)(readMedia)-- Tuskegee resident Col. Mark McGuire was recently inducted into the 2011 Brevard College Gallery of Distinguished Alumni in Brevard, N.C.

McGuire was one of three Distinguished Alumni recipients who were recognized by the College's Alumni Advisory Board for making significant differences in their communities, professions and the world as well as bringing honor and respect to Brevard College by living out its motto, "Learn in Order to Serve."

McGuire graduated from Brevard College in 1974. During his time at BC, he served as editor of the Clarion student newspaper, vice president of the student body and played on the College's golf team.

He continued his education at Auburn University, where he earned a degree in political science. McGuire also attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center of Optometry, where he earned his doctorate of optometry.

Following graduation, McGuire entered the U.S. Army where he served for 3 ½ years. He then made the decision to enter the Army Reserve where he has had an impressive 31 years of service. While in the Army Reserves, McGuire has served four calls of active duty, including two tours in Kuwait and one tour in Iraq. He also has received numerous awards, including two Bronze Star medals, two Combat Action Badges, a Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Superior Unit award, among others.

Since 2003, McGuire has been the Chief of Optometry for Central Alabama, providing primary eye care to more than 140,000 veterans from a three state area. He manages a staff of six optometrists, two nurses, six technicians and 3 administrative assistants.
