Sandy Thomas Inducted into 2011 Brevard College Gallery of Distinguished Alumni

BREVARD, NC (10/26/2011)(readMedia)-- Former Gastonia resident Sandy Thomas was recently inducted into the 2011 Brevard College Gallery of Distinguished Alumni in Brevard, N.C.
Thomas was one of three Distinguished Alumni recipients who were recognized by the College's Alumni Advisory Board for making significant differences in their communities, professions and the world as well as bringing honor and respect to Brevard College by living out its motto, "Learn in Order to Serve."
Thomas graduated from Brevard College in 1970. While at Brevard, she served as a president of Mnemosynean Society and as a reporter for the Clarion student newspaper. Thomas was also a member of the women's basketball team and Women's Recreation Association. During her sophomore year, she was an attendant on the College's Valentine Court.
Thomas currently serves as vice president of Global Girl Scouting/ Strategic Alliances at Girl Scouts of the USA in New York City. As vice president, she ensures that the Girl Scout program connects girls of all ages to the international sisterhood of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Thomas also networks with organizations around the globe, raising girls' voices in international forums, and helping girls grow as responsible global citizens. She is responsible for the establishment of National Girl Scout organizations in three Pacific Island nations: Federal States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
Thomas, who has worked professionally in the Girl Scout organization for 39 years, was previously director of USA Girl Scouts Overseas at Girls Scouts of the USA. In her role as director, she was responsible for providing service to more than 16,000 American girls and adults living in 220 locations in 94 countries.
In collaboration with Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State, Thomas created the Global Awareness Badge for Junior Girl Scouts, to help girls ages 9-11 become more familiar with their world. She also is the recipient of the Girl Scouting's prestigious national award, the Juliette Low World Friendship Medal, for excellence in international service.
