New York's Largest Grocery Workers Union Mobilizes Thousands to Stop Fast Track

Members of Congress should listen to their constituents, not special interests.

WESTBURY, NY (06/11/2015) (readMedia)-- New York's largest grocery workers union, United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1500 , today released the following statement urging members of the House of Representatives to vote no on fast track and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

"Unfair trade deals have been catastrophic for hard-working families. They have driven down wages and benefits, shipped good jobs overseas, and caused income inequality to explode. Enough is enough. UFCW Local 1500 represents thousands of workers all across New York and we are urging every Member of Congress to do the right thing and vote no on fast track.

According to a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, 55 percent of Americans oppose fast track, including 61 percent of independents. A majority of Americans oppose this legislation because the TPP follows an outdated trade model that has consistently failed hard-working men and women.

When it comes to fast track, Members of Congress should listen to their constituents, not special interests. This fight is about more than just a vote on an anti-worker trade deal so bad that its contents are kept secret from the public. This is about whether Members of Congress will do what is right for the people they are sworn to serve.

UFCW Local 1500 has spent the week helping to connect union members to their U.S. Representative, including at last night's union membership meeting. None of us plan to rest until this secret, job-killing trade deal is stopped cold.
