Raavin Evans-Miss Spelman 2011-2012

ATLANTA, GA (04/20/2011)(readMedia)-- Spelman College junior Raavin Evans, a political science major, won the coveted title of Miss Spelman 2011-2012 on April 9, 2011. Seven Spelman students competed in the pageant held in conjunction with festivities celebrating the College's 130th anniversary.

"I am deeply humbled to have been given this opportunity," said Evans of being named Miss Spelman. "What's most exciting is the chance to reach out spiritually, academically, and socially to my Spelman sisters, the Atlanta University Center and the community. I have been given the opportunity to make an impact not just locally, but globally, and it is my goal to do just that."

During the ceremony, Evans, a native of Dallas, Texas, discussed her platform, "United We Love: Giving Our Hearts to the Homeless." She said the aim of her homeless initiative is to help those without homes reach self-sufficiency through a series of workshops and classes and a career fair. "This program also intends to encourage members of communities nationally to become more involved with the fight to end homelessness as well as alter their perception and negative feelings toward homeless individuals. The fight for the homeless is a task that I have been charged with because my family and I once were homeless."

As an ambassador for Spelman College, Evans will represent the College to prospective students, parents, donors and external constituents; serve as a guest panelist on forums; and engage in community service projects.

Juniors Deloris Wilson, a political science major, and Margaret Armoo-Daniels, a sociology major, will serve as first and second attendants to Evans, respectively. Wilson, from Tuscaloosa, Ala., has a platform focused on ending child sex slavery. Armoo-Daniels, a native of Worcester, Mass., has centered her platform on international service. Evans and her court are currently planning events for the 2011-2012 academic year that address their particular platforms.

Ideals that Miss Spelman and her court value are: academic excellence, ethical leadership, appreciation of diverse cultures, and commitment to positive social change.
