Rachel Malone Named Brockport Female Athlete of the Year
BROCKPORT, NY (05/13/2013)(readMedia)-- Sophomore Rachel Malone (Fairport, NY/Fairport) ran her way into the women's cross country and track and field record books throughout the 2012-2013 seasons and has been named The College at Brockport Female Athlete of the Year for her efforts.
Malone finished the 2012 cross country season with one of the most successful performances in program history, earning All-American honors at the NCAA championships. The sophomore became the first female runner in school history to earn All-American honors after finishing 34th at the championships with a time of 21:58.3, the second fastest time in Brockport history. Malone finished the 2012 season with the top five times in school history, including the fastest mark of 21:19.50 set on Oct. 15 at the Oberlin Invite.
Malone was named to the first team All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) after finishing second at the conference championships. The sophomore was later named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region team after finishing fourth at the Atlantic Regional. Malone was the top SUNYAC finisher at the meet.
Malone carried her success over the indoor track and field season where the sophomore captured the SUNYAC Championship in the women's 5,000 meter run with a facility record time of 17:37.80, earning first team All-SUNYAC honors. Malone later shattered her own record in the event, finishing with a time of 17:19.19 at Tufts University.
The outdoor season proved to be much of the same as Malone won the SUNYAC Championship in the women's 10,000 meter run. Malone's season-best time in the event came at the Bison Classic at Bucknell on April 13 with a time of 36:18.04. Malone's time currently ranks 20th among all Division III runners.
Malone will attempt to qualify for the 2013 NCAA Championships by competing at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships May 16-17 at Springfield.
