American Lung Association Invites Work Teams, Community Groups and Individuals to Step Out Against Asthma

LOUISVILLE, KY (03/24/2009)(readMedia)-- The American Lung Association is fighting for air, and they're looking for lots of good foot soldiers to join them at the 2009 Louisville Asthma Walk.

The 2009 Louisville Asthma Walk will take place Saturday, June 6th in downtown Louisville at Waterfront Park. Check-in will begin at 8:00 a.m. The walk will begin at 9:00 a.m.

Participants in this fun, family style walk will have a chance to meet others in the community as they raise funds for a great cause. Participants can also explore various exhibitor booths, enjoy free refreshments, and get a free breathing test.

Proceeds from the Louisville Asthma Walk help support lung health programs and services and fund much needed research. Asthma affects more than 22 million Americans, including more than 350,000 children and adults in Kentucky alone.

Asthma is the leading cause of missed school days due to chronic illness. It is also a major cause of emergency room visits and in-patient hospital stays. The American Lung Association estimates asthma costs the U.S. over $19 billion a year in direct health costs, lost work time and lost productivity.

While asthma cannot yet be cured, with the right information and medical care it can and should be largely controlled. The programs, services and research supported by the Asthma Walk are aimed at taking control of asthma and reducing the burden this serious and sometimes even deadly lung disease places on so many families and communities.

Members of the community are invited to register a team and/or themselves at www.asthmawalk.org.
