Ronald Ricker Named Iowan of the Day

DES MOINES, IA (08/03/2026) (readMedia)-- The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation and Cookies Food Products are pleased to present the late Ronald Ricker of Des Moines as a 2026 Iowa State Fair "Iowan of the Day" on Thursday August 20.

Before passing this past year, Ron lived a life defined by service, generosity, and an enduring love for the Iowa State Fair. Through military service, a distinguished legal career, volunteer leadership, and mentorship, he touched the lives of countless Iowans while strengthening the communities he loved.

After graduating from Iowa State University, Ron served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War before earning his law degree through the GI Bill. He spent decades as an attorney, helping countless individuals and families while building a reputation for integrity, compassion, and service.

Dedicated to giving back, Ron served as the sole outside advisor for his Iowa State University fraternity, mentoring generations of young leaders. He also founded and led the Ron Ricker Running Club, creating a welcoming community for runners of all ages while raising funds for charitable causes throughout Central Iowa. His commitment to service extended beyond Iowa through his support of Dowling Catholic High School and participation in international mission work in Venezuela and Brazil.

Ron's love for the Iowa State Fair began as a teenager when he worked at the Fair and even slept in his car beneath the Grandstand so he wouldn't miss a moment of the excitement. That passion continued throughout his life as he proudly drove his red Corvette in the Iowa State Fair Parade for Bill Riley and Bill Riley Jr., becoming a familiar face at the event he treasured.

Whether mentoring students, supporting charitable organizations, practicing law, or sharing his enthusiasm for the Iowa State Fair, Ricker exemplified the spirit of giving. His lifelong dedication to helping others leaves a legacy that continues to inspire those who knew him.

Ron's award will be accepted by loved ones on the Iowa State Fair's Anne and Bill Riley Stage at noon on August 20.

The Iowan of the Day program, presented by the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation, recognizes outstanding Iowans who have made a positive difference in their communities through service, leadership, and dedication to others.
