Schenectady County Library Public Event

"The Reading Promise" author to speak at Central Library

SCHENECTADY, NY (03/20/2012)(readMedia)-- Alice Ozma, author of "The Reading Promise: My Father and the Books We Shared" will speak at Schenectady County Public Library on Saturday, March 31 at 10:30 a.m. The program will take place in the McChesney Room.

Doors will open at 10 a.m. Seating is on a first-come basis. To register, call 388-4511.

The book tells the true story of the reading adventure Alice and her father started when she was in the fourth grade. They wanted to see if he could read aloud to her for 100 consecutive nights. When they reached that goal, they decided to continue the daily storytelling ritual until the day Alice left for college. In what became known as "The Streak," they read books such as "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens, the Oz books by L. Frank Baum, the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll, and Shakespeare's plays.

"We hope Alice's visit will inspire others to start a reading streak of their own in Schenectady County," said Karen Bradley, program coordinator. "Information on how to start a streak will be made available at the program."

The Open Door Bookstore will be conducting a book sale and signing after the program. Pre-orders at a 20 percent discount must be made by March 27 by calling the store at 346-2719. Books will be sold at full price the day of the program.
