Supermarket Union to Hold Strike/Lockout Preparation Meetings; Over 6,000 Stop and Shop Employees Affected

Hundreds Expected in Uniondale and Mount Kisco Sunday Evening to Receive Update on Potential for Work Stoppage Three Days Before Thanksgiving Holiday

WESTBURY, NY (11/24/2013)(readMedia)-- Stop and Shop employees represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500 will meet Sunday night to receive an update on the possibility of work stoppage at over 45 New York area supermarkets heading into the Thanksgiving holiday.

Stop and Shop stores located in Suffolk, Nassau, Westchester, Putnam and Duchess County's, as well as the five boroughs. would be affected by the work stoppage. The 6,000 members of UFCW Local 1500 have been working without a contract since November 3rd.

UFCW Local 1500 recieved strike authorization from the membership on October 28th.

After failing to reach an accord on a new collecttive bargaining agreement that originally expired September 28th, UFCW Local 1500 and Stop and Shop management began meeting this past week with the assistance of a Federal Mediator. Since minimal progress was made, UFCW Local 1500 called for the Sunday night meetings to prepare the work force for a possible work stoppage just three days before Thanksgiving.
