The Genevans conclude spring tour with campus concerts
Geneva College's student choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. on March 22 and 23.
BEAVER FALLS, PA (03/21/2013)(readMedia)-- The Genevans, the student choir of Geneva, will end its spring semester season with concerts on March 22 and 23, 2013. Performing in John White Chapel of Old Main, both events begin at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 7 p.m.
"Walk as Children of Light" is the theme for the program, which is intended to celebrate the milestone 75th anniversary year in the choir's history, as well as explore the book of Ephesians. In addition to favorites such as Sons of Geneva, the school's alma mater, Smith added several of his own compositions.
"I was actually shocked that I could not find settings of Ephesians by the big names like Bach, Brahms and Mendelssohn," said Smith. "But with more digging, arranging, and with help from several friends, we've collected a great set of pieces for the most important passages of the book."
In addition, the choir commissioned Indiana native composer Diane Whitacre to write a choral setting of Psalm 98. "The piece never fails to give me chills," Smith said. "Diane will be joining us for these campus performances. She said that she is so excited that she can't sleep, and we are thrilled to sing it for her."
These two performances will mark the end of a 12-concert tour that The Genevans embarked upon over Spring Break, which took them to West Virginia, Virginia, South Carolina, Florida, and Maryland.
The student choir of Geneva College, The Genevans is heir to a tradition of choral singing dating from the early years of the college over a century and a half ago. The choir's repertoire is broad and varied, reflecting the belief that "all of life, always and everywhere, is life in the presence of God."
Both performances are free and open to the public.
