Geneva College Henry Mancini Theatre Awards

BEAVER FALLS, PA (04/26/2012)(readMedia)-- As the 2012 high school musical theater season winds down, anticipation for the 18th annual Geneva College Henry Mancini Theatre Awards is increasing. The Mancini Awards, which will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 7 p.m. in Metheny Fieldhouse, recognize the accomplishments of students from 13 area high schools that participate in musical theater.

For the second year, the students awarded "Best Actor" and "Best Actress" will receive national recognition and the opportunity to perform on Broadway at the National High School Musical Theater Awards (NHSMTA). This program gives the awards winners the chance to travel to New York to study under performing arts professionals as well as be a part of a performance with other students at the end of the experience. Last year's winners were John Michael Taormina of Quigley Catholic High School and Bethany Menjivar of Ambridge Area High School.

The Henry Mancini Musical Theatre Awards were established in 1994 to provide an opportunity for high school students to perform and receive awards for their school musical productions. Every year, several area schools are approved into the program to promote and celebrate the arts in high school students. All high schools in the Beaver, Butler and Lawrence County areas are invited to attend.

Geneva College presents these awards because of its commitment to support the arts in Western Pennsylvania as well as to preserve the Mancini legacy that is part of the college's diverse heritage. The McCarl Family, another organization committed to enhancing the arts in Western Pennsylvania, also partners with Geneva College to make the event possible.

Geneva College awards a $1,000 scholarship to any student participant enrolling at Geneva, which includes anyone who has acted in the school musical, performed in the orchestra or was part of the stage crew/production team.

In addition, $1,000 Muriel McCarl Scholarships, established by The McCarl Family Foundation, are awarded to two student participants majoring in music. One award is presented to an enrolling Geneva College freshman and one to an enrolling freshman at any four-year college or university.
