Geneva College Visiting Artist and Lecture Series spring schedule

The college welcomes acclaimed speakers discussing a wide variety of topics and interests.

BEAVER FALLS, PA (01/28/2013)(readMedia)-- Geneva College invites renowned guests to campus each semester who serve to enrich the educational experience while engaging the campus and surrounding community with cultural ideas and values. Visitors include distinguished lecturers, well-known musicians and performers, best-selling authors and leading religious figures.

The scheduled Geneva Visiting Artist and Lecture Series (GVALS) line-up for the spring 2013 semester includes:

Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow Marcia Grant-Monday, January 28 at 10 a.m. in Skye Lounge and Thursday, January 31 at 7:30 p.m. in John White Chapel

Marcia Grant is the Founding Dean, President, and Academic Vice Dean of Effat College, a leading private institution of higher education for women that is located in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. She also serves as Education Counselor for Princess Lolowah bint Faisal, a member of the Saudi Royal Family, and is currently writing about this experience from her home in southwest France. In addition to her two public lectures, Grant will be a guest lecturer for numerous classes and meet with members of Geneva's administration and faculty throughout the week.

PNC Park Architect David Greusel-Wednesday, February 6 at 10:10 a.m. in Metheny Fieldhouse and at 7:30 p.m. in John White Chapel

With over 30 years of experience, architect David Greusel has designed such significant projects as Pittsburgh Pirates stadium PNC Park and Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros. He is a founding principal of the company Convergence Design, an architectural practice based out of Kansas City. Greusel has taught communication skills to architects and allied professionals nationwide, and authored Architect's Essentials of Presentation Skills, part of the Architect's Essentials series published by Wiley. For his contributions to the profession of architecture, Greusel was elevated to Fellow in the American Institute of Architects in 2009.

American Enterprise Institute Resident Scholar Michael Rubin-Thursday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Friday, February 22 at 10:10 a.m. in John White Chapel

Michael Rubin is a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and senior lecturer at the Naval Postgraduate School. A former Pentagon official whose major research area is the Middle East, Rubin regularly instructs senior military officers deploying to the Middle East and teaches Iranian history, culture, and politics onboard U.S. aircraft carriers. He is the author of Into the Shadows: Radical Vigilantes in Khatami's Iran and was the primary drafter of the Bipartisan Policy Center's 2008 taskforce report, Meeting the Challenge: U.S. Policy toward Iranian Nuclear Development. He also served as editor of Middle East Quarterly from 2004-2009.

Redeemer University Professor of English Dr. Deborah Bowen-Thursday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Friday, March 15 at 10:10 a.m. in John White Chapel

Dr. Bowen is Professor of English at Redeemer University where she teaches courses in British Novel, Literature and the Environment, Victorian Literature, Modern British Literature, Contemporary Fiction, Postcolonial Literature, Contemporary Literary Theory, and Contemporary Canadian Poetry. Among Dr. Bowen's published works are her latest book, Stories of the Middle Space: Reading the Ethics of Postmodern Realisms, and a 2007 book on Christianity's postmodern influence that she edited, The Strategic Smorgasbord of Postmodernity: Literature and the Christian Critic. She has also published 60 academic papers in the U.K., Belgium, the U.S. and Canada.

Founder of Iraqi Christian Relief Council Juliana Taimoorazy-Thursday, April 4 at 7 p.m. at Pathway Church

Juliana Taimoorazy is the Founder and President of the Iraqi Christian Relief Council. She came to the U.S. from Iran in 1990 to escape religious persecution. In 1994, while still in college, she joined Assyrians Around the World (AAW), a news media, entertainment and broadcast services company based in Chicago. Currently, she hosts the worldwide radio program "Assyrian Open Forum Show." Her experience as a mentor to female Christian refugees from Turkey and Syria led her to establish the Iraqi Christian Relief Council, a nonprofit organization that cooperates with other U.S. entities to educate Americans about the religious and ethnic cleansing occurring to Christians in Iraq.

Guests are brought to Geneva through a variety of separate speaker series collectively known as Guests@Geneva. Programs that are part of Guests@Geneva include the Geneva Visiting Artist and Lecture Series (GVALS), the Faith and Culture series, the Bitar and Vos Lectures, and select Chapel speakers scheduled for evening engagements. All Guests@Geneva engagements are free, and the public is invited to attend.
