BEAVER FALLS, PA (01/16/2014)(readMedia)-- Geneva College's Students Against Modern Slavery club is partnering with the Beaver County Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition to present a screening of the film documentary Not My Life. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Wednesday, February 5 at 7 p.m. in Skye Lounge of Geneva's Student Center.
Not My Life depicts the cruel practices of human trafficking and modern slavery on a global scale. Filmed on five continents and in a dozen countries, Not My Life takes viewers into a world where millions of children are exploited every day through practices including forced labor, domestic servitude, begging, sex tourism, sexual violence and child soldiering.
Though challenging, Not My Life's message is ultimately one of hope. Victims of slavery can be set free and go on to live happy and productive lives. Those who advocate for slavery victims are growing in numbers and are increasingly effective.
"Students Against Modern Slavery exists on Geneva's campus to educate the student body and faculty about the nearly 30 million people who are in slavery today," says club president Colleen Champ, a senior human services major. "We hope to move beyond awareness to action. Students Against Modern Slavery is building a relationship and joining the Beaver County Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition in their work, with this event being our first partnership."
The Beaver County Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition seeks to bring awareness through education and forums to eliminate the growing problem of human trafficking. Members, primarily the Sisters of St. Joseph, law enforcement officials, social service workers and the Beaver County District Attorney, seek to build practical coalitions and solutions to prevent and eradicate human trafficking and rescue women and others who are being exploited and enslaved.
Geneva College invites students to accept the challenge of an academically excellent, Christ-centered and affordable education.
