BEAVER FALLS, PA (01/10/2013)(readMedia)-- "Living in Color: Equipping Leaders to Serve in a Diverse World" will be held on the Geneva College campus Friday and Saturday, February 8–9, 2013. The event opens Friday evening at 6 p.m. and ends Saturday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. Two-day, Friday-only and Saturday-only registration is available.
This is the inaugural year for the Living in Color conference, which is designed for educators, administrators, pastors, community leaders, college students, parents and others who are concerned with issues of diversity. Considering the rapidly changing demographics and increasingly global nature of our society, conference speakers will discuss current challenges related to diversity and discuss what it means to be an effective leader in the workplace, classroom and society.
"Until we are able to see the world as a beautiful mosaic of different people, different cultures and different colors, we are missing the beauty of God's creation," explains Kathy Kinzer-Downs, Director of Multicultural Student Services at Geneva College and one of the conference organizers.
Kinzer-Downs is also one of the keynote speakers for the event, along with Landon and Khadija Adams, domestic missionaries through the Coalition for Christian Outreach (CCO); and Rev. Avery Danage, a campus minister with the Coalition for Christian Outreach (CCO).
Workshops for the weekend are organized into three tracks: pastoral, community development and education. Session leaders include Dr. Robert Frazier, Professor of Philosophy at Geneva College; Dr. Cathy Sigmund, Professor of Psychology, Counseling and Human Services and Director of the Human Services Program at Geneva College; Rev. E. Eugene Williams, Senior Pastor of Lifeway Christian Fellowship, a distinctly diverse church Body in Beaver Falls; Rev. Dr. Rodger Woodworth, Director of Cross-Cultural Ministries for the Coalition for Christian Outreach (CCO); Dr. John M. Wallace Jr., Philip Hallen Chair in Community Health and Social Justice at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, and the senior pastor of Bible Center Church of God in Christ in Pittsburgh; and Muriel Fox Alim, Education Director for Pittsburgh Urban Christian School (PUCS).
In addition, a panel of former and current college students will share their experiences of living and attending classes on primarily white campuses.
Advanced registration is available online. A two-day pass is $25, which includes lunch. A Friday pass is $10 and a Saturday pass, also including lunch, is $15. College students may attend the conference for free, but are required to show a current student ID upon entry. Add $10 for all registrations made at the door.
