Higher Ed Library Group Campaigns for Knowledge Based Economy; Seeks State Leadership

ALBANY, NY (12/10/2008)(readMedia)-- Given the woes of New York's finance, insurance and real estate based economy the future must be built around research and knowledge according to Jason Kramer, executive director of the NYS Higher Education Initiative (NYSHEI) in an interview published today on the Empire Page website.

"Using our ICE [intellectual, cultural & educational] resources – which we have in abundance – we can build a better New York," Kramer states, but to do so New York needs a commitment from the state's political leadership to use its academic resources "to create a statewide information infrastructure [that] provides students, faculty, entrepreneurs, researchers and small businesses with access to world-leading research."

NYSHEI has put forth a proposal that would "create a statewide network that would put more electronic information resources in the academic and research libraries, while providing desktop access to small businesses, innovators and other entrepreneurs."

The complete interview -- as well as previous interviews on related topics -- can be found in the Improving New York section of the Empire Page.

The Improving New York section of the Empire Page explores solutions to New York's government-related problems. Future interviews will examine educational funding, government waste and property tax issues.
