ALBANY, NY (12/10/2012)(readMedia)-- Working families will gather today at the New York State Capitol in recognition of International Human Rights Day. While hearing from a range of speakers from Labor & Community groups, as well as elected officials, they will shine a spotlight on the collective voices of our community in an effort to protect programs that millions of New Yorkers rely on - including Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid.

They will be joined by Congressman Paul Tonko and local leaders to keep pressure on Congress, calling for an end to tax cuts for the richest 2% and say NO to proposed cuts from the House GOP which include over $103 billion from Medicaid over the next 10 years and also increase the eligibility age for Medicare.

Please refer to the attached report from the New York State AFL-CIO for more about the potential impact of proposed cuts to vital services.

Since the election, New York's working families have been mobilizing around the "lame duck" session and the impending "fiscal cliff" scenario. On Nov. 8, working families across the country held nearly 100 events outside Congressional offices, health clinics, Social Security offices, construction sites and other community locations.

Today's event coincides with hundreds of similar events across the Nation.
