Makoto Fujimura is recognized as a cultural shaper, melding his incredible talent with his Japanese-American heritage and faith in Christ. Fujimura's artistic style blends abstract expressionism with the traditional Japanese art of Nihonga. He founded the International Arts Movement, a nonprofit that encourages artists to wrestle with questions of art, faith and humanity through workshops, lectures and performances. Fujimura authored a memoir, "River Grace," and a collection of essays, "Refractions: A Journey of Faith, Art and Culture."

Fujimura has also completed original works for Crossway's The Four Holy Gospels, published in the English Standard Version to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible in 1611.

"His art is beautiful," reflected Dr. Jeremy Kolwinska, dean of the College of Arts & Humanities and interim chair for the Department of Art & Design. "It is fascinating to learn more about the process of creation he goes through. Beyond that, though, he has thought carefully about his Christian faith and how it intersects with art and concepts of beauty. It is inspiring to learn from someone who is at the top of their field."
