Maria Solis on Campus

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (12/21/2010)(readMedia)-- Maria Solis is a senior at Marian University in Indianapolis and a member of the university's Sacred Choir. She is from Lanesville, Indiana, and graduated from Our Lady of Providence Jr./Sr. High School in Clarksville, Indiana, where she was salutatorian.

Ever since she was a small child, Solis has sung everywhere she went. She has sung while cleaning, studying for finals, and even in the grocery store. Music is an expression of her very being whether composing a silly bedtime song for her little brother or singing for her friend's wedding. She has a been a part of numerous choirs and recently performed the lead role of Amalia Balash in the Broadway musical She Loves Me" at Marian University. Solis loves random dancing in the dining hall and listening to Mozart. In addition to her on-campus activities, she also teaches confirmation for the St. Christopher parish in Indianapolis

Although she has had many powerful experiences with music, none have changed her like those that involve her medical career. While working as a caregiver for the elderly, she would often offer to sing for her patients. The way they responded to her music helped her see the importance of medical care that attended to the body, mind, and soul. Nothing gives her more joy than to belt "Can't Take My Eyes of You" or pray "Amazing Grace" with her patients. She plans to attend medical school after graduation. She desires to work with the elderly in medically underserved areas and has a special interest in hospice care. Maria believes in the healing power of music and hopes to use her vocal talents throughout her career as a physician. The funds obtained through the sale of her music will go toward her education.
