Morrisville Student Awarded Nursing Scholarship

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA (11/05/2009)(readMedia)-- Jennifer Torres of Morrisville, Pa., was awarded the Edna B. McKenzie Scholarship and the William Randolph Hearst Scholarship from Gwynedd-Mercy College during a ceremony on Oct. 26.

The Edna B. McKenzie Scholarship was established by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation in honor of Dr. McKenzie, a distinguished educator and longtime member of the PHEAA Board and the Foundation Board.

The William Randolph Hearst Scholarship, established by the philanthropist it is named after in 1945, is awarded to a full-time student who displays strong academic skills with preference being given to an individual of Hispanic or Latino heritage.

Torres, a senior, will graduate with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in August 2010. Upon graduation, Torres plans to earn her master's degree to specialize in pediatric oncology. Her ultimate career goal is to acquire a position at a hospital for cancer research.

Based on a 2009 national report from the American Enterprise Institute, Gwynedd-Mercy College ranked fourth in the nation in its category for high graduation rates. The college prepares students to become top professionals in the fields of allied health professions, arts and sciences, business, education and nursing. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1948, the college is a coeducational institution offering more than 40 associate, bachelor's and master's degree programs on a full and part-time basis.
