NYS Can Have a Green Energy Future Alliance Executive Argues in Empire Page Interview

ALBANY, NY (04/20/2009)(readMedia)-- New York State needs green energy and we're well on the way to getting there, according to Carol E. Murphy, executive director of the Alliance for Clean Energy New York. Murphy discussed her organization's goals and the status of alternative energy in an interview published today on the Empire Page website.

Why alternative energy? "Wind and other sources of renewable energy offer real benefits to public health and the environment versus the alternatives of fossil and nuclear fuel resources which produce harmful air pollutants, mercury contamination, greenhouse gasses and long-lived radioactive waste products," according to Murphy.

Murphy answered those who worry that the shift to green energy may harm New York economically keeping energy prices higher than in other states. "Overall, by having renewable energy like hydro and wind farms supply power to New York's competitive wholesale power markets, they displace more expensive and polluting fossil fuel plants," Murphy stated.

Murphy believes New York should have no trouble reaching the goal set by Gov. Paterson for 30 percent of energy in New York coming from renewal sources. "We can easily achieve the 30% goal or more by 2015," Murphy stated, "if New York continues to support the renewable energy programs and incentives."
