NYSARC Trust Services Recreation Grant News Release

NEW YORK, NY (01/09/2018) (readMedia)-- The Trustees of the NYSARC, Inc. Trust have approved a remainder fund grant of $15,000 per chapter to provide recreational opportunities for people they support. Last year the Chapter received a similar grant from NYSARC Trust Services to enrich the programming in twenty AHRC recreation programs and plans to use the funds in the same fashion this year. Thanks to this generous grant and in keeping with the 2017-2018 school-year "Living Healthy" initiative, the Recreation Department continued to have robust program activities. The funds from the NYSARC grant were used to enhance the "Living Healthy" initiative serving twenty-five AHRC recreation programs throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The funds also enhanced staff development that impacted nearly 900 individuals. Fifteen of our Afterschool and Saturday Recreation programs benefited through our community partnerships (Common Threads, HAI @YAI and EPIC Players NYC) programs by enhancing our nutrition education and offering therapeutic arts and drama workshops. Additionally, we purchased various program enhancements and services for ten programs ranging from fitness memberships, IPADs, and developed a small resource library. The grant also made it possible for us to develop and refine the skills of our program leaders in promoting positive behavior and nutrition education affecting all 900 or so individuals through training by Ramapo Programs for Children and Common Threads. Through this generous grant, nearly 900 children, teens and adults with developmental disabilities were positively impacted by these program enhancements. A total of $2,793,500 in remainder grants was awarded in 2017 to support recreation and guardianship statewide. NYSARC Trust Services administers supplemental needs trusts that enable people with disabilities to remain in their home and community while retaining Medicaid services and other government benefits.
