Opposition to Cuomo's Plan to Cut $120 Million for the Developmentally Disabled Grows

Hundreds of Individuals with Disabilities to Rally in front of Governor's Office in Manhattan at 11 AM Today, March 15, 2013

NEW YORK, NY (03/15/2013)(readMedia)-- New York, NY - Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's plan to cut $120 million in financing for nonprofit organizations that serve people with developmental disabilities is emerging as a major issue in this year's budget negotiations.

Both the State Assembly and the Senate are planning to propose restoring the full amount of money that the Governor is seeking to cut. "We all recognize that it's important to protect our most vulnerable citizens," said Assembly Speaker, Sheldon Silver in a quote in a March 7th New York Times article. "These cuts would result in severe hardship and diminished services for individuals with disabilities, their families and providers." But the ultimate decision lies with the Governor and he stands firm on his decision to cut funds to this population.

Gov. Cuomo, proposed the reduction in funding two weeks ago allegedly in order to help fill the gap that emerged in his budget plan because of changes in federal government reimbursement to the state for the care of people with developmental disabilities. The governor's proposal came after negotiations with federal officials who said New York State overbilled Medicaid for years for the institutional care of people with disabilities. Unfortunately the onus of New York State policies are being placed on people with developmental disabilities in New York State and the providers who support are them. People with disabilities will be paying the price in Gov. Cuomo's budget!

Last Friday, March 8th, several hundred individuals rallied in front of the Governor's office on 3rd Avenue and 40th Street in opposition to the proposed cuts. Friday March 15th at 11 AM will bring hundreds of additional advocates, family members and individuals with developmental disabilities to the streets in front of the Governor's office.
