BROCKPORT, NY (05/11/2011)(readMedia)-- The hundreds of student-athletes on The College at Brockport's 23 varsity sports teams combined to earn dozens of All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) honors, a handful of national accolades and numerous academic awards while both the men's soccer and women's lacrosse teams once again qualified for the NCAA Division III tournaments.
In a year filled with memorable accomplishments, Brockport announced that junior wrestler Tom Rispoli (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) emerged as the college's Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.
The awards were announced during Brockport's annual Student-Athlete Awards celebration, held Saturday inside Brockport's Tuttle North Ice Arena.
Rispoli, a Physical Education major, carries a 3.98 GPA. He was honored as a Scholar All-American according to the National Wrestling Coaches' Association. His was the highest of the 152 athletes to receive Scholar All-American honors. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must carry a GPA of 3.20 or better, and meet one of three qualifying criteria: qualifying for the annual NCAA championships, placing in the NCAA's qualifying tournament, or winning more than 66 percent of his matches.
Rispoli compiled a 27-6 record during the 2010-11 season, including going 15-1 against fellow Division III wrestlers.
The Athlete and Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were determined after compiling votes from each of Brockport's varsity coaches, as well as the Athletic Communications staff and select athletic administrators.
