BROCKPORT, NY (05/13/2013)(readMedia)-- Senior Zach Ferrara (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) of the men's track and field team has been named The College at Brockport Male Athlete of the Year after capturing a national championship for the Golden Eagles.
Ferrara was crowned national champion at the 2013 indoor track and field championships at North Central College in Naperville, IL on March 8. The senior provided one of the most historic performances in program history. Ferrara cleared a school record height of 5.09 meters (15' 8 ΒΌ") to take top honors at the meet.
The 2013 season was one to remember for Ferrara as the senior captured State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships in both the indoor and outdoor season, setting school records along the way. Ferrara won the indoor pole vault championship for the second consecutive season. The senior's national championship mark also set the SUNYAC record.
Ferrara cleared a Brockport outdoor record of 4.85 meters (15' 11") to win the SUNYAC outdoor title. His mark currently ranks 10th among all Division III jumpers. Ferrara became the first Brockport athlete to win the outdoor pole vault championship since Chris Brhel in 2006.
Ferrara and the Golden Eagles will continue their outdoor season at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships at Springfield on May 16-17. The NCAA Championships will be held May 23-25 at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.
