ALBANY, NY (12/04/2008)(readMedia)-- The 1,277 town and village so-called "Justice Courts" place an "enormous burden" on taxpayer-funded resources at the local, county and state levels according to Elliot Moskowitz, General Counsel to the Special Commission on the Future of New York State, in an interview published today on the Empire Page website.
The "drain on resources adversely affects the quality of justice that is delivered in the Justice Courts," Moskowitz stated.
The organization of Justice Courts in New York reflects an era before the automobile, telephone and computer. The Commission found that proceedings often take place without a prosecutor or defense attorney present, resulting in delays and unequal justice.
The Commission in a report released in September of this year recommended that panels be set up in each county to review the current configuration and manage a process of consolidation.
The complete interview -- as well as previous interviews on government inefficiency -- can be found in the "Improving New York" section of the Empire Page.
The Improving New York section of the Empire Page explores solutions to New York's government-related problems. The next interview will look at what the State Legislature and Governor will be confront December 15 when they return to Albany to tackle the state's budget crisis.
