ALBANY, NY (10/11/2016)(readMedia)-- SPARE PARTS (U.S., 2015, 114 minutes, color, directed by Sean McNamara) will be shown on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall, Performing Arts Center on the University at Albany's uptown campus [note early start time and UAlbany uptown location]. Sponsored by the New York State Writers Institute as part of its Classic Film Series, the screening is free and open to the public.

This feature film, starring George Lopez, Jamie Lee Curtis, Carlos PenaVega, and José Julián, is based on the true story of four Hispanic high school students who enter a national robotics competition. With no experience and a bare-bones budget they take on teams from some of the country's most prestigious universities.

The documentary that recounts the same story, UNDERWATER DREAMS (2014), will be screened on Friday, November 4 at 7 p.m. at Page Hall on the UAlbany downtown campus, with film commentary by director Mary Mazzio and Lorenzo Santillan, one of the students who participated in the contest.

The two film screenings are part of "The New Americans: Recent Immigrant Experiences in Fiction, Nonfiction, and Film," a series that examines the challenges and achievements of recent immigrant groups in the United States. Funding support for the series is provided by University Auxiliary Services, and UAlbany's College of Arts & Sciences.
