New York Needs Property Tax Relief This Year States Reform Advocate

ALBANY, NY (05/06/2009)(readMedia)-- Ron Deutsch, coordinator of a coalition dedicated to setting a ceiling on the percentage of their income that New Yorkers have to pay for property taxes – the so-called circuit breaker, is hoping a clean bill can be passed before the end of the 2009 session. Deutsch explained his group's position in an interview published today on the Empire Page website.

Deutsch states that the Omnibus Consortium – named because of their support of the "Omnibus Property Tax Reform Bill" has "been working together over the past 11 months on legislation that would reform the property tax system to provide immediate relief to overburdened homeowners through creation of a property tax circuit breaker — with the long-term goal of creating a fair and equitable tax system by shifting costs from the local level to the state."

The Consortium favors a circuit breaker over a property tax because according to Deutsch "we realize it is the only mechanism that can deliver immediate relief to overburdened property tax payers across the state and is the only politically and fiscally responsible approach."
