ALBANY, NY (02/27/2014)(readMedia)-- THE QUIET MAN (United States, 1952, 129 minutes, color, directed by John Ford) will be shown on Friday, March 14, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. in Page Hall, 135 Western Avenue, on the University at Albany's downtown campus. Sponsored by the New York State Writers Institute as part of its Classic Film Series, the screening is free and open to the public.

Director John Ford called upon his friend and favorite actor, John Wayne, to play a former prizefighter who retires to the Irish village of his birth. Unexpectedly, he falls in love with a fiery red-head (Maureen O'Hara), but must negotiate his way around her disapproving brother (Victor McLaglen). Though cast against type, Wayne turns in what some believe to be his greatest performance. Ford received an Oscar for Best Director for THE QUIET MAN. He stated that it was the most personal film he ever made, and also said it was one of his favorites.
