ST.PAUL, MN (01/31/2014)(readMedia)-- University of Northwestern President Alan S. Cureton, Ph.D., has been appointed to serve as vice chair of the NCAA Division III Presidents Council for 2014.
In 2012, Cureton was appointed to fill an immediate two-year vacancy on the council, becoming the first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) president on the council. Now elected to a four-year term, by natural progression he will serve as the Presidents Council's chair for the 2015 calendar year.
"Serving the NCAA Division III membership in this new leadership role is a delight for me," Cureton said. "I look forward to working with my colleagues, athletic directors, and coaches from around the country as we work together to advance the mission, viability, and visibility of Division III during a critical time for collegiate athletics."
The Presidents Council is the highest ranking group in the NCAA Division III governance structure, meeting in person on a quarterly basis and exercising ultimate authority for creating, modifying and implementing policies as well as oversight of allocation of the annual NCAA Division III budget. In his new role on the council, Cureton will chair the NCAA Division III Strategic Planning and Finance Committee.
Currently Cureton also serves as the chair of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Council of Presidents and is a member of the NCAA Division III Chancellors/Presidents Advisory Group since 2010.
With over 35 years of experience in higher education, Cureton has served as president of Northwestern since 2002. He holds a B.A. in Bible and Christian Education from Sterling College and a Ph.D. in History and Philosophy of Education from Iowa State University. In 2007, he received the Alumni Achievement Award from Iowa State University, recognizing his meritorious service and distinguished achievements in higher education. In 2013, he received the Outstanding Alumni Award from his alma mater.
During his collegiate undergraduate career, Dr. Cureton competed on the gridiron earning all-conference recognition his senior year. He is especially proud of having started and played in every football game throughout his four-year collegiate career.
