Farmers Market Garden Festival Will Feature Flower Auction, Free Tomato Plants
MENANDS, NY (05/14/2008)(readMedia)-- The Capital District Farmers Market in Menands will hold their second annual Garden Festival this Saturday, May 17. This is an opportunity for home gardeners to buy plants and flowers directly from the farmers who started them. The event will be held from 8 AM to 2 PM under the market shed pavilion, rain or shine, at 381 Broadway in Menands. That’s route 32, just south of route 378, and just off 787.
This year the Garden Festival will hold a flower auction starting at 11 AM, where anyone can bid on everything from hanging baskets to flats of vegetable plants. A free tomato plant will be given to the occupants of each car that enters the market, while supplies last. The Festival will also feature home baked goods, homemade jewelry, and a bouncy bounce for the kids.
This is the first of six special events planned for this year at the Farmers Market to celebrate their 75th anniversary. The market was founded in 1933 as a place for farmers to sell their produce. Today, the market continues to be a distribution hub for all of upstate New York and western New England where farmers, wholesalers and merchants buy and sell during the week, and hold a Saturday market open to the public every Saturday from the beginning of May to the end of October.
As part of the 75th anniversary celebration, the market has produced a five minute video about the market. It can be viewed at their web site, CapitalDistrictFarmersMarket.org, or you can contact the market office on 465-1023 and they will send a DVD.
