ALBANY, NY (10/17/2016)(readMedia)-- Howard Frank Mosher will read from his latest novel, God's Kingdom (2015), at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1 in the Huxley Theatre of the NYS Museum, Cultural Education Center, Albany. Earlier that same day at 4:15 p.m. the author will hold an informal seminar in the Assembly Hall of the Campus Center on the UAlbany uptown campus. Free and open to the public, the events are sponsored by the New York State Writers Institute and Friends of the New York State Library.
Howard Frank Mosher, acclaimed author of ten novels set in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, will discuss and read from God's Kingdom (2015), his most recent book. Author Stephen King calls God's Kingdom "American fiction at its very best, a rip-roaring story full of hilarity and heartbreak...honest and emotionally resonant," and added "don't miss it." Echoing this praise, Frank O. Smith of Maine's Portland Press Herald hails Mosher's "many storytelling gifts" including the "literary sleight of hand," through which "he begins to tell a certain type of story but slowly lifts the veil to reveal it as something completely more vexing...and leaves the reader marveling at how he does it."
Mosher's other most recent novels include Walking to Gatlinburg (2010), a Civil War odyssey that Publishers Weekly described as "an engrossing tale with mass appeal;" On Kingdom Mountain (2007); and Waiting for Teddy Williams (2005), which Publishers Weekly called "one of the funniest and most heartfelt baseball stories in recent memory."
Three of Mosher's earlier novels were adapted for film by director Jay Craven: Disappearances (1977, film 2006), starring Kris Kristofferson and Billy Connolly; Where the Rivers Flow North (1978, film1994), starring Rip Torn and Michael J. Fox; and A Stranger in the Kingdom (1989, film 1998), starring Martin Sheen and Ernie Hudson.
Mosher has also written two memoirs, North Country: A Personal Journey through the Borderland (1997), and The Great Northern Express: A Writer's Journey Home (2012), about his three-month coast-to-coast sojourn following intensive radiation treatment for prostate cancer.
Mosher has received numerous awards for this work including Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Award, the New England Book Award, and the 2011 New England Independent Booksellers Association's President's Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts.
