ALBANY, NY (03/03/2010)(readMedia)-- "After Life" ("Wandâfuru Raifu," Japan, 1998, 118 minutes, color, in Japanese with English subtitles, directed by Hirokazu Kore-Eda) will be shown on Friday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Page Hall, 135 Western Avenue, on the University at Albany's downtown campus. Sponsored by the New York State Writers Institute, the screening is free and open to the public.
A deliberately spare, thoughtful work, "After Life" presents a kind of antechamber to heaven in which the recently deceased are asked to choose a single cherished memory to preserve for all eternity. Stephen Holden of the "New York Times" called it a "brilliant, humorous, transcendently compassionate film."
