URBANA, OH (04/12/2011)(readMedia)-- In one of the most successful weeks of athletics at Urbana University this year, one particular Blue Knight shined above the rest.  On Thursday, the Blue Knight lacrosse team reached a huge milestone for their program. Taking on the Mountain Lions from the College of Mt. St. Joseph's, freshman Brittany Mazzu (Derby, New York/Lake Shore Senior High School) set the school record with 8 goals while leading the team to it's historic first win, a 19-12 victory.  Then, in the Blue Knights' very next game on Saturday, Mazzu recorded 6 more goals in an 11-7 win over West Virginia Wesleyan College.  For her effort, Mazzu has been named the Blue Knight Student-Athlete of the Week.

All season long, the Blue Knights have struggled to find their first win in their inaugural season.  The team lost each of their first 11 games, but they kept playing hard and improving with each outing.  The first win finally came thanks to the effort of the Blue Knights' freshman center.  Before Thursday's win, no Blue Knight had scored more than 3 goals in a game. Mazzu had more than that in the first half.  Her 8 goals came on a team-high 13 shots on goal, and she added an assist on Urbana's first goal of the game.

With one game remaining this season, Mazzu leads the team with 38 goals.  She's averaging 2.71 goals a game, good for  46th in the nation.  Mazzu is also ranked 12th in the country in caused turnovers and 22nd in ground balls.  As a first-year member of the UU women's soccer team in the fall, Mazzu tallied 2 goals and 2 assists.
