Volkmer Earns All-ICAA Freshman of the Year

URBANA, OH (11/22/2011)(readMedia)-- Urbana University volleyball player Kelsey Volkmer (Galion, Ohio/Colonel Crawford HS) collected another individual award today. The first-year hitter was named the Indepedents' Collegiate Athletic Association (ICAA) Freshman of the Year after a stellar season that saw her lead Urbana in kills (304) and attack percentage (.241). Volkmer was also rewarded with a spot on the All-ICAA Third Team.

The ICAA is composed of NCAA Division II schools currently not in a conference. Volleyball members are Black Hills State, Central Oklahoma, Central State, Lindenwood, Notre Dame College, Palm Beach Atlantic, Urbana, Ursuline and Washington Adventist. Voting took place amongst the 9 school's Sports Information Directors. Central Oklahoma led the way with six selections and Lindenwood, Notre Dame College and Palm Beach Atlantic have at least four selections apiece. Bob White of Palm Beach Atlantic was named Coach of the Year. He led the Sailfish to a record of 27-3, an NCCAA regional title and the ICAA Championship. White is 212-57 in seven years as head coach at Palm Beach Atlantic.

Player of the Year went to outside hitter Alex Richardson of Central Oklahoma. She averaged 3.79 kills, 4.07 points and 0.48 blocks per set over 124 sets. Libero of the Year was Kalia Schrimpf of Lindenwood. She averaged 5.04 digs per set over 155 sets and totaled 781 digs on the season. Setter of the Year went to Bella Romero of Central Oklahoma. She averaged 10.01 assists, 2.21 digs and 0.28 service aces per set over 124 sets, and the Freshman of the Year was Volkmer, who averaged 2.58 kills and 0.45 blocks per set while hitting .241 over 118 sets.
