MEDIA RELEASE:
Albany NY --- Jonathan Demme's A MASTER BUILDER (United States, 2013, 130 minutes, PG), will be screened 7 p.m. Friday, April 13, at Page Hall, 135 Western Avenue, on the University at Albany downtown campus. The event, sponsored by the NYS Writers Institute's Classic Film Series, is free and open to the public.
The film is being shown in association with the April 30 visit of major American set designer Eugene Lee, who created the film's production design.
A MASTER BUILDER was adapted from Henrik Ibsen's play for a contemporary setting by Wallace Shawn, who plays the architect Halvard Solness, an egomaniac who enjoys manipulating and bullying everyone around him, especially his wife and mistresses.
Demme, whose previous films include STOP MAKING SENSE (1984), SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991), and PHILADELPHIA (1993), based his direction on the near-legendary production created for the stage by co-star André Gregory. Gregory previously worked with Shawn in two acclaimed Louis Malle films, MY DINNER WITH ANDRE (1981) and VANYA ON 42nd STREET (1994).
